A day of nature and culture at the edge of Arusha National Park.

Students of Africa Amini Secondary School in Sustainable Tourism with the day’s menu

A tree with two shifts

The Africa Amini tree works two shifts. At night it belongs to the animals. Giraffes step out of the dark and browse at its edges, and buffalo cross the swamp below it on their way to look for grass.

During the day it gives shade to whoever needs it: guests on their way back from a game drive, volunteers taking a break, staff of Africa Amini Alama eating lunch. It is also where the whole story began. Almost two decades ago the NGO was born under these branches, and the tree has stood for the same idea ever since. People and wildlife can share this piece of land.

Neighbours for generations

The tree stands just outside Momella Gate of Arusha National Park, in a corner of Tanzania where people and animals have lived side by side for generations. Long before the area became a national park, the Maasai and Meru knew the deep mountain forest on the slopes of Mount Meru as their pharmacy. Bark, roots and leaves from that forest were medicine for fevers, wounds and stomach trouble, and much of that knowledge is still alive in the villages today.

The park came later, but the neighbours stayed. Cattle graze on one side of the boundary, giraffes on the other, and on most days nobody seems to mind very much. It is a quieter kind of Africa than the big savannah parks, and that is exactly its charm.

Lunch, served by the students

Some people here will tell you the tree sits on a ley line running between Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. Meru rises right behind you, and on a clear day Kilimanjaro shows itself on the other side. Kili is shy, though. She likes to hide in cloud through the middle of the day, so if you catch it, count yourself lucky.

Lunch is cooked and served by the students of Africa Amini Secondary School in Sustainable Tourism, the first school in Tanzania to combine a regular secondary education with vocational training in tourism. For the students this is a real shift in a real restaurant, and they take it seriously. They set the tables with colourful kitenge cloth, and carry the plates out themselves.

After lunch the students walk you around their school and show you what they are proudest of: the permaculture garden, the recycling project and the values they live by.

More than wildlife

Most people come to Tanzania for the animals, and they are right to. But what stays with many guests is the life around the tree. The Meru people farm the green slopes here, and you will meet them on the road, at the market and around the projects.

The women’s tailoring group sits close by, surrounded by bolts of bright fabric and the clatter of sewing machines. Their dresses, bags and aprons are the same colourful prints the students wear when they serve your lunch. And somewhere in the middle of your meal you will probably hear the bell of the nearby primary school, followed by children spilling out of their classroom.

One day, too many choices

This is where it gets tricky. Some guests want to go deeper and see more of the projects: the natural healing clinic, the primary school and the tourism school. Others want a long morning in the park, looking for colobus monkeys in the forest and flamingos on the Momella lakes. Fitting all of that into one day is not easy.

The good news is that you don’t have to choose in advance. Do a game drive in the morning, come out through Momella Gate for lunch under the tree, and the school will arrange your re-entry into the park at no extra cost. Or skip the second drive and spend the afternoon with the projects instead. We are flexible, and the day can be shaped around what interests you most.

Nature and culture live close together here. For a day, you can be part of it.

The tea ceremony at Dolly Escape, 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport: a guided walk through the medicinal garden, then healing teas brewed at the river.

Most people who come to Dolly Escape know about the horses, the farm and Arusha National Park next door. Fewer know about the tea ceremony, which is the quietest thing on the list and, for some guests, the one they talk about afterwards. It is a guided walk through the medicinal garden, followed by healing teas brewed and tasted at the riverside. This is what it is, where it fits in a stay and who it suits, at the farm and river camp on Dolly Estate at Usa River, 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport.

What the tea ceremony is

It comes in two parts. First, a guided walk through the medicinal garden on the estate. Your guide shows you what grows there and what it is traditionally used for. We are not going to list the plants here. Half the point is standing next to them, rubbing a leaf between your fingers and being surprised by what it smells like.

Then the river. The teas are brewed and tasted at the riverside, under the old fig trees that the monkeys visit daily. On our experiences page we call it a quiet ritual of connection to nature, tradition and yourself, and that is about right. Nobody hurries it. You sit, you drink, you listen to the water. On a clear afternoon Mount Meru stands behind the trees.

The medicinal garden and the garden that feeds the kitchen

Dolly Escape is a farm first. The organic gardens on the estate grow the vegetables for the Chef’s Table, and the farm tour, about 45 minutes through those gardens with the people who grow the food, is our gift to every guest. The medicinal garden belongs to the same idea: plants grown here and brewed here. One garden feeds you. The other makes you a cup of tea.

Tea and snacks are complimentary throughout the day at the camp, so nobody goes short of a cup. The ceremony is a different thing. It is tea with a guide, a story and a place.

Where the tea ceremony fits in a stay

In our four-night stay it sits on day four. The morning is the farm: walk the gardens and pick what you will eat tonight. The afternoon is the tea ceremony: the medicinal garden, then the teas at the river. If you still want more, Willi, our 1960s Land Rover, goes out through the estate at golden hour, past eland, zebra and gazelle. Choose one, or all three. Nothing at Dolly is scheduled until you want it to be.

It also pairs well with a massage by the river. Our therapist works at the riverside, from a 30-minute foot or tension-relief massage to a 90-minute full massage; book a day ahead at reception. Massage, tea, sundowner at the fire, three courses at the Chef’s Table: that is a reasonable afternoon after a week in a safari vehicle.

Four nights is the stay all of this was designed for, which is why direct bookings of four nights or more include return Kilimanjaro Airport transfers. Otherwise transfers are USD 50 per vehicle, which generally takes four people with luggage or six without.

Who it suits

The tea ceremony suits people who have just come off a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb and want an afternoon that asks nothing of their legs. Couples. Anyone who keeps a garden at home. Children are welcome at Dolly; whether a slow walk and a cup of tea holds their attention is something only you can judge.

If you want to go further into local medicinal plants, a full day with Africa Amini Alama, the community projects near the estate, includes a visit to a healing clinic where you learn about them, and lunch under their fig tree. Ask us and we will arrange it.

Practical

Check-in is from 14:00, check-out by 11:00. The camp has eight tents on a bend of the Usa River: six luxury tents, a Superior Double with a king bed and two singles, and one family tent. The sixth luxury tent and the Superior Double open on 15 December 2026. From 3 February 2027 there is also The Villa, a private five-bedroom house for up to 10 (two king rooms, three twin or double rooms), two kilometres from the camp. The tea ceremony, like the horses and the farm, is on the estate, so villa guests reach it as easily as camp guests.

Dolly Estate is about 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport, about 35 minutes from Arusha town, about 50 minutes from Arusha Airport for safari flights, and about 15 minutes from Usa River village. The estate itself is around 200 hectares of bushland and river, with eland, zebra, wildebeest and gazelle, and more than 400 bird species counted so far. The tea is the small part. The place it is drunk in is the rest.

Arusha is where most northern Tanzania safaris start, and many people spend a day or two here before or after. These are the things to do around Arusha that we send our own guests to, from Usa River, about 35 minutes east of Arusha town. Ask us for current prices when you plan your day.

Arusha National Park

The park gate is a few minutes from Dolly Estate. Inside are the Momella Lakes with their flamingos, Ngurdoto Crater, colobus monkeys and the forest on the slopes of Mount Meru. A day in the park can include lunch under a famous fig tree. More in Arusha National Park from Usa River.

Lake Duluti and the waterfall below Mount Meru

A walk along the riverbank, a canoe on Lake Duluti, and the waterfall at the foot of Mount Meru, all in one easy day.

Coffee, markets and craft

A half-day coffee experience with a local farming community: how coffee is grown, harvested and processed

The Maasai market in Arusha for handicrafts, and Cultural Heritage for African art

The street markets in Usa River, Tengeru and Arusha

Africa Amini Alama

A full day with the Africa Amini Alama community projects: a healing clinic that teaches the use of local medicinal plants, primary and secondary schools, a women’s tailoring group, a children’s village and a vocational centre, with lunch under the fig tree.

Golf at Kiligolf

An 18-hole course at the foot of Kilimanjaro, a short drive from Usa River.

A day on Dolly Estate

You don’t have to stay with us to spend a day on the estate. Ride out with our guide Jackson across 200 hectares of bushland past eland and zebra, then stay for lunch or dinner from the farm kitchen. See Day visits.

Staying with us, there is more on the estate itself: a drive in Willi, our 1960s Land Rover, bike tours, the farm tour, a tea ceremony and a massage by the river. All of it is on Experiences.

Getting around

Most of these trips need a car and driver. We can arrange both from the camp. Dolly Escape is about 35 minutes from Arusha town and 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport.

Most flights into northern Tanzania land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and many leave again late in the evening. Where […]

Most flights into northern Tanzania land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and many leave again late in the evening. Where you sleep on either side of a safari matters more than it seems: a long drive after a long flight, or a rushed last day, takes the edge off the whole trip. This is how the options around JRO compare, and where Dolly Escape fits in.

Three places to stay near Kilimanjaro Airport

Right by the airport. The shortest drive when you land at midnight, but there is little to do the next day.

Arusha town. Shops, restaurants and safari offices, but also traffic and noise, and a longer drive from JRO.

Usa River, between the two. Quiet, green and close to Arusha National Park. A good place to sleep off the flight, or to spend a last unhurried day before flying home.

How far Dolly Escape is from everything

Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO): about 45 minutes

Arusha town: about 35 minutes

Arusha Airport: about 50 minutes

Arusha National Park gate: a few minutes

We arrange airport transfers at USD 50 per vehicle. On direct bookings of four nights or more, the return transfers are free. Send us your flight number when you book, and we plan your arrival around it.

Your first night

The camp sits on Dolly Estate, a private wildlife estate on the Usa River below Mount Meru. You wake to the river and the birds rather than traffic, with eland and zebra on the estate and breakfast from our own farm. Check-in is from 14:00.

Your last day

An evening flight leaves a whole day to fill. Ride out across the estate with our guide Jackson, take the farm tour, have a massage by the river, or spend the morning in Arusha National Park. If your flight leaves late, tell us and we will help you plan the day. Check-out is by 11:00.

Or stay longer

Many guests use the camp as a rest stop in the middle of a trip, between safari, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. Read four nights near Kilimanjaro Airport and rest days in northern Tanzania.

Book

See The Camp for the tents, or The Villa for families and groups of up to 10 from 3 February 2027.
The farm tour at Dolly Escape, 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport: walk the gardens that feed the kitchen, pick tonight's vegetables, then eat them.

The farm tour is the shortest thing we offer, and the one that ends up on your plate. It takes about 45 minutes, starts a short walk from the tents, and ends with a tomato eaten warm off the vine. It is our gift to every guest at Dolly Escape, the farm and river camp on Dolly Estate at Usa River, 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport. This is what it is, who grows the food, and where it fits in a stay.

What the farm tour actually is

You walk through the gardens that feed the kitchen with the people who work them. They show you how the land is worked, what is in the ground this week and what is coming next. You taste as you go. The farm exists to feed the Chef’s Table; the tour is simply a walk through it.

It is organic and it is close. The vegetables you will eat tonight are still in the soil a short walk from the camp, which is why our kitchen can say, without stretching it, that your lunch grew a hundred metres away.

Pick what you will eat tonight

The farm tour leads straight into the kitchen. There is no menu at the Chef’s Table. Tell us what you cannot or will not eat, and the kitchen cooks from what the farm gave us that morning: local tradition met with a European taste, familiar enough to relax into and new enough to remember. Lunch is two courses, dinner is three, and there is a sundowner by the fire in between.

Vegetarian, vegan, halal and dairy-free are cooked, not accommodated. On the day you walk the farm, you can pick what goes on your plate that evening. It is a small thing, and it changes how dinner tastes.

The standard rate is bed and breakfast. Lunch and dinner are added on request, farm to table from what is grown on the estate. Coffee, tea and snacks are complimentary through the day.

Who grows it, and why

The farm belongs to an NGO. It feeds children and teaches regenerative farming inside the local secondary school, so the beds you walk through are also a classroom. The growers you meet are the people doing that work.

The land around it has its own story. Dolly Estate is a former sisal farm of around 200 hectares that has become a private game reserve, with eland, zebra, wildebeest and gazelle, and over 400 bird species counted so far. The gardens sit inside that, below Mount Meru, and the monkeys in the fig trees know exactly what a kitchen is for.

Where the farm tour fits in a stay

Most guests arrive after days of early alarms and long drives, so the first day at Dolly is for nothing. The farm comes later. In a four-night stay it is usually the fourth day: walk the gardens in the morning and pick what you will eat tonight, then the tea ceremony in the afternoon, a guided walk through the medicinal garden with healing teas brewed at the riverside. The old Land Rover at golden hour, if you like. The full shape of a stay is on our experiences page.

Between two safaris, with only two or three nights, it still fits. Wash the dust off, sleep, and eat something green that grew a hundred metres away before we hand you back to your driver. Stay four nights or more, booked directly with us, and your return Kilimanjaro Airport transfers are included.

The camp has eight tents on a bend of the Usa River: six luxury tents, a Superior Double with a king bed and two singles, and one family tent. The sixth luxury tent and the Superior Double open on 15 December 2026. From 3 February 2027 there is also The Villa, a private five-bedroom house for up to 10, two kilometres from the camp, with meals from the camp’s kitchen added on request. Villa guests are as welcome in the gardens as anyone staying at the camp.

Practical

The tour takes about 45 minutes and is our gift to every guest. Nothing at Dolly is scheduled until you want it to be, so tell us which morning suits you. Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 11:00. Cooking classes are coming soon, so the walk from soil to plate will shortly have a stove at the end of it.

Most people arrive at Dolly after a week of watching animals through a car window. A horse safari is the opposite of that. You are in the bush at walking pace, with nothing between you and the eland but a saddle and a horse that has done this many times before. Ninety minutes, straight out of the camp, with Jackson, our guide.

What the ride actually is

The safari leaves from the camp and goes into the estate: a former sisal farm of around 200 hectares that has become a private game reserve, home to eland, zebra, wildebeest and gazelle. The pace is relaxed. On a clear morning Mount Meru stands behind the trees, and over 400 bird species have been counted on the estate, so there is plenty to look at even when the zebra are elsewhere.

Jackson takes at most two riders per safari. That is the detail worth noticing. The pace is set by the people in the saddle, not by the slowest rider in a group of ten, and Jackson is close enough to talk to for the whole ride. One guest called him “their wonderful trainer” in a Google review, which is about right.

Who a horse safari suits

All levels. If you have never sat on a horse, this is a reasonable place to start: a relaxed pace, a guide riding alongside, and a ride short enough that you will want another. If you ride regularly, the interesting part is the ground rather than the riding: bush and open grass with eland, zebra and gazelle in it, and Meru behind.

Two things to know before you book. Rider weight is limited to 95 kg, and we would rather say that plainly here than at the stables. And each safari takes two riders, so a party of four rides in two groups, which most people find is a feature rather than a problem: the other two are at the pool.

If riding is not for you, the estate does not disappear. Willi, our 1960s Land Rover, covers the same ground in 1.5 hours with a soft drink included, and there is a guided half-day bike tour, or a bike to take out on your own. The full list is on the experiences page.

What to bring

Closed shoes and long trousers. That is the whole list. Everything else is arranged by us and paid at the camp. Ask reception for current prices; we do not publish them here because they change.

When to ride, and how to book it

Book the first activity when you book the stay, and decide the rest at breakfast. Nothing at Dolly is scheduled until you want it to be.

The shape most stays take puts the ride on the second morning. Day one is for nothing: shoes off, a breakfast that becomes lunch, the river, the pool, dinner at the fire. Day two is the estate: the horse safari in the morning, then a massage by the river in the afternoon, from a 30-minute foot or tension-relief massage to a 90-minute full one, booked a day ahead. If you are here for a week, day seven has room for a second ride. Guests who stay four nights usually ride twice.

Four nights is also where the arithmetic changes. Book four nights or more directly with us and your return transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport are included. Otherwise transfers are USD 50 per vehicle, which generally takes four people with luggage or six without. The drive is about 45 minutes, check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 11:00, so a morning ride on the last day still leaves time for a shower before the airport.

Where you sleep afterwards

The camp has eight tents on a bend of the river under the fig trees: six luxury tents, a Superior Double with a king bed and two single beds, and one family tent. The sixth luxury tent and the Superior Double open on 15 December 2026, and stays from that date can be booked now.

From 3 February 2027 there is also The Villa: a private five-bedroom house with its own pool on six hectares within the estate, two kilometres from the camp. Two rooms have king beds, three can be made up as twin or double, and it sleeps up to 10. In the evening the horses sometimes wander up from the stables to the pool to say hello, which is as close as most people get to a horse safari without booking one.

What a day of doing nothing at Dolly Escape looks like, hour by hour: the river, the pool, the farm and the fire, 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport.

Most itineraries in northern Tanzania have no empty day. Safari, mountain, beach, airport. Guests who arrive at Dolly Escape after a week of early alarms and long drives usually ask what there is to do. The honest answer is: not much, unless you want to. This is what a day of doing not much looks like at the river camp, 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport.

06:30 – The river wakes you, not an alarm

The tents sit on a bend of the Usa River under old fig trees. If you left the door open, the river has been running all night and the birds start before the light does. Over 400 species have been counted on the estate, and you do not need to know a single name to enjoy them. On a clear morning Mount Meru stands behind the trees.

The first coffee is on your own terrace, a few steps from the water. The monkeys visit the fig trees daily and watch from the branches. They know what a kitchen is for, so keep the snacks inside.

08:30 – A breakfast that becomes lunch

Breakfast is included in the rate and nobody is timing it. Amina, our manager, likes to sit down with guests at this point and ask how they got here and what brought them all this way. After that, the table by the river is yours for as long as you want it.

Coffee, tea and snacks are complimentary throughout the day, so the border between breakfast and lunch is not policed. If you want a proper two-course lunch from the Chef’s Table, say so. There is no menu. The kitchen cooks from what the farm gave it that morning.

10:00 – Hammock, pool, book

The living room at the camp is the riverbank. A hammock under the figs. A lounge chair on your terrace over the water. The infinity pool looks into the tree canopy rather than at a wall. Wi-Fi reaches the tents and the common areas and works for everyday use, which is enough to send one message home and then stop.

A guest who stayed three nights after a six-day safari wrote recently that the full rest day passed without boredom, between watching the monkeys, reading at the river and the pool. That is roughly the plan. If sitting still is not your strength, a bike is available with a helmet, and the estate is yours to ride.

14:00 – A massage by the river, if you booked yesterday

New guests check in from 14:00; the ones leaving were gone by 11:00. You will notice neither. This is the hour for our therapist, who works at the riverside. Treatments run from a 30-minute foot or tension-relief massage to a 90-minute full massage. The one rule: book a day ahead, at reception. After a week in a safari vehicle, that is not a hard sell.

16:30 – The farm, then the light

The farm tour is our gift to every guest: about 45 minutes through the gardens that feed the kitchen, with the people who grow them, and a tomato off the vine. The vegetables you will eat tonight are still in the ground at this point. The farm belongs to an NGO that feeds children and teaches regenerative farming inside the local secondary school, so the tomato has a longer story than most.

If you want a little more, the tea ceremony follows: a guided walk through the medicinal garden, then healing teas brewed and tasted at the riverside. If you want more still, Willi, our 1960s Land Rover, goes out through the estate at golden hour, past eland, zebra and gazelle. Choose one. Or none. The full list is on our experiences page, and nothing on it is scheduled until you want it to be.

18:30 – Sundowner, fire, three courses

The fireplace is where the day ends. A sundowner by the fire, then a three-course dinner at the Chef’s Table. Tell the kitchen what you cannot or will not eat; the rest is a surprise, local tradition met with a European taste. Vegetarian, vegan, halal and dairy-free are cooked, not accommodated. Then bed, a king or twin under a mosquito net, with the river still running outside a door you can leave open.

Why one rest day tends to become two

The first day like this is recovery. The second is when something changes: you stop checking the time. That is why our four-night stay is built around one day of nothing followed by the estate, Arusha National Park and the farm, and why direct bookings of four nights or more include return Kilimanjaro Airport transfers. Otherwise transfers are USD 50 per vehicle, which generally takes four people with luggage or six without.

The practical part: check-in is from 14:00, check-out by 11:00. The camp has eight tents: six luxury tents, a Superior Double with a king bed and two singles, and one family tent. Come for one night and you will see the place. Stay four and you will stop looking at your watch.

Landing at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and heading for Arusha? The drive, the road, what to expect after a long-haul flight, and why many guests stop at Usa River, 45 minutes from the airport, instead.

Almost everyone who visits northern Tanzania lands at Kilimanjaro International Airport, code JRO, and then gets into a car. The road west leads to Arusha, the safari capital; the road east to Moshi and the mountain. Between the airport and Arusha lies Usa River, where we are. This is a plain guide to that first drive, written for people who have just spent a night in an aeroplane.

The airport

JRO is small, and that is a mercy after Amsterdam or Doha. Immigration, visa on arrival if you did not get one online, bags, and out. If your driver is meeting you, they will be at the exit with a sign. If we are collecting you, look for the Dolly Escape sign; transfers are included for direct bookings of four nights or more, otherwise charged per vehicle.

The road to Arusha

The airport sits south of the main Arusha–Moshi road. You drive out of the airport, join the highway, and turn west. It is tarmac all the way, busy with buses, motorbikes and the occasional herd of cattle, and Mount Meru fills the windscreen on a clear morning. Arusha town is an hour to an hour and a quarter from the airport depending on traffic, and the last stretch into town clogs at the end of the working day. Usa River is on the way, about 45 minutes from the airport; Arusha National Park’s gate is just off the road here.

Where to spend the first night

Most itineraries put the first night in Arusha because that is where the safari vehicles start. It is a practical choice and a joyless one: a hotel room in a busy town, an early pick-up, and the sense that your holiday starts tomorrow. The alternative is to stop short, at Usa River, and start it tonight. You are 45 minutes from the plane instead of well over an hour, the safari driver collects you here in the morning just as easily, and you sleep by a river rather than a road.

If you have a day to spare

A rest day between the flight and the safari is the single best thing you can add to a Tanzanian itinerary. Sleep in, walk the farm, ride a horse in the afternoon, or do the Arusha National Park in a morning. Your driver will thank you too; guests who start rested see more.

The other direction: the last night

The same logic applies in reverse. Many long-haul flights out of JRO leave in the evening. A last night at Usa River means a slow morning, a late check-out where we can, lunch, and a 45-minute drive to the airport instead of a dash from the parks. We wrote a longer piece on ending a safari well.

Practical

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to Dolly Escape: about 45 minutes by road.

Dolly Escape to Arusha town: about 35 minutes; to Arusha Airport (safari flights): about 50 minutes.

Transfers: included on direct bookings of four nights or more; otherwise USD 50 per vehicle per transfer (generally four people with luggage, or six without).

Check-in from 14:00; early arrivals are welcome to sit by the river until the tent is ready.

Check availability or write to reservations@dollyescape.com with your flight number and we will do the rest.

Arusha National Park is the park most itineraries skip. It sits between the airport and the town, it has no lions, and the safari operators are in a hurry to get you to Tarangire. That is exactly why it is worth a day, and from Dolly Escape it is barely a drive at all: the park gate on the Usa River side is a few minutes from our own gate.

What is in it

The park is small and varied in a way the big parks are not. The Momella Lakes are alkaline and shallow and, in season, pink with flamingos. The montane forest around Ngurdoto Crater holds black-and-white colobus monkeys, which you will not find in most of the other northern parks. Ngurdoto itself is a collapsed volcanic crater with a swampy floor where buffalo graze; you look down into it from the rim. Above everything stands Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second mountain, whose lower slopes are inside the park. Giraffe, zebra, buffalo, waterbuck, bushbuck and warthog are common; elephant pass through; leopard live here but keep to themselves.

Half day or full day

A half day is the lakes and the crater rim, out after breakfast and home for a late lunch at the camp. A full day adds the forest on the Meru side, a picnic at the lakes and a slower drive back through the plains. If you have three or more nights with us, the full day is the one to take; it leaves the other days free for the estate and for doing nothing.

Walking safari and canoeing

This is one of the few northern parks where you can get out of the vehicle. A walking safari with an armed park ranger takes you along the forest edge and towards the Meru foothills; canoeing on the Momella Lakes puts you at flamingo height. Both are arranged through the park and must be booked ahead, so tell us when you book your stay.

How we arrange it

We book the vehicle and driver-guide, sort out the park entry and pack lunch from the kitchen. Park fees are set by TANAPA and paid per person per day; we will confirm the current amounts when you book. Leave at eight and you are at the lakes before the light goes flat.

Make a day of the mountain instead

Serious walkers climb Mount Meru in three or four days from the Momella gate. It is a proper trek, higher than most people expect, and a very good acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. We can hold your luggage and your tent while you are up there and have a hot shower and a long dinner ready when you come down.

Where you sleep

The Camp is on the Usa River, on the park side of the Arusha–Moshi road, eight safari tents on a working farm with a kitchen that grows most of what it cooks. From February 2027 there is also The Villa for families and groups.

Check availability or write to reservations@dollyescape.com and say you want the park day; we will build the rest around it.

From 15 December 2026 the camp grows to eight tents: a sixth luxury tent and the new Superior Double, with a king bed and two singles.

For the last year, the camp has been six tents on a bend of the Usa River: five luxury tents and one family tent. From 15 December 2026 two new tents join the row, and the camp grows to eight.

A sixth luxury tent

The first addition is another luxury tent in the style of the existing five: canvas, a proper bed under a mosquito net, a hot shower, its own terrace and the river within earshot. More room at the camp for the busiest weeks of the year.

The Superior Double

The second is a new tent type for the camp: the Superior Double, with a king-size bed and two single beds. It works for a couple who want more space, or for a family of four who would rather share one tent than split across two. The existing family tent stays exactly as it is.

What it means for bookings

From 15 December 2026 the camp has eight tents: six luxury tents, the Superior Double and the family tent. Whole-camp bookings grow accordingly. Both new tents can be booked now for stays from 15 December onwards, directly on the website. As always, direct bookings of four nights or more include your return transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 45 minutes away.

The pictures are artist’s impressions; we will replace them with photographs as the tents go up. If you would like to be among the first to stay in either, check availability or write to reservations@dollyescape.com.
